The Triskele, a symbol that has moved through Ireland for 5,000 years

Written by Sophie Gavin

The Triskele is one of the oldest and most enduring symbols of Ireland.

It can still be seen carved into the ancient stones of Newgrange, a site created over 5,000 years ago, where its three spirals continue to speak across time.

The Triskele reaches back into Ireland’s deep prehistoric past and is most famously associated with Newgrange, where spiral carvings survive on the stones of the great passage tomb built around 3200 BCE, making it older than both Stonehenge and the pyramids of Giza. At Brú na Bóinne, spiral art appears as part of one of the richest surviving bodies of Neolithic stone carving in Europe, which is part of what gives the symbol such weight in Irish cultural memory.

You have probably seen the Triskele before, but do you know what it means?

Its exact meaning was never written down by the people who carved it, which is part of its mystery, but the three-fold spiral is often understood today as a symbol of movement, continuity, and cyclical life.

People commonly read it through patterns that feel deeply human: life, death and rebirth, past, present and future, or the turning rhythms of nature and the seasons. Rather than standing for one fixed idea, the Triskele endures because it seems to hold several meanings at once: motion, balance, return, and the sense that life is always unfolding in circles rather than straight lines.

The Triskele is a symbol we are deeply drawn to at Celtic Fusion. In our work, it is more than decoration. It is a thread of connection to Irish heritage, to the cycles of nature, and to the stories carried through time. A small but powerful reminder that what we wear can carry meaning, memory, and a long-lasting story.

We recently created a video exploring the beauty and symbolism of the Triskele, and we would love to share it with you. Watch the video and discover the story behind one of Ireland’s most ancient symbols.
